Residents from as far afield as Rossington and Wheatley had complained of a high-pitched squealing noise which had been keeping them from sleeping at night.

The source of the sound has now been traced to a sewage treatment plant on Wheatley Hall Road – and Yorkshire Water chiefs have issued an apology after discovering the racket was being caused by faulty machinery.

Reporting the noise on Facebook, one resident said: “Anyone know what that high pitched squeal is? It's been going on for ages.”

Another added: “Been going on about a week does my nut in - sounds like rusty swings.”
