"We've got our pub back!" Customers' joy as temp boss becomes permanent

The bar has had a number of recent issues

Customers at a Doncaster pub hit by a number of recent issues including its closure have reacted with joy after a temporary boss announced he was taking over the bar permanently.

The Spinney in Balby was briefly forced to close last month and new bosses were left in the lurch after the previous tenant moved on without leaving details of upcoming parties and celebrations at the bar.

New landlord Christian Edginton told customers: “As you know, I stepped in to look after The Spinney on a temporary basis.

“But after so many lovely chats, your kind feedback, and plenty of careful thought, I’m absolutely delighted to say I’m staying permanently!

“In all my years in hospitality, I’ve never walked through a door and instantly felt like I’d come home — and that’s 100% down to every single one of you.

“You’ve made me feel so welcome, right from day one, and this place really does feel like family now.

“I’ve got loads of exciting plans and fresh ideas bubbling away — can’t wait to share them all with you!

“Here’s to growing together, making memories, and keeping this heart of our community beating strong.I hope you’ll keep supporting me and your local as we move forward — because let’s be honest… this isn’t just a pub. It’s YOUR local. It’s YOUR second home.”

Customers reacted with delight and one said: “That’s good news - we got our pub back.”

Another shared: “That's brilliant news mate. You are just what the place needs,”

Another added: “Absolutely delighted for you and for customers. You are friendly and approachable just what we need.”

Last month, in a departing video message, landlady Lisa Thomason, who has taken over The New Anglers in Sheffield, said: “I’d like to thank everyone that supported me over the years.

“It’s been great, it’s been such a ride and the people that haven’t supported me - thank you to you guys as well, because you’ve made me such a stronger person that I can run any pub now thanks to you.”

Days later, new bosses revealed: “Unfortunately, Lisa hasn’t handed over any booking information or records before leaving, so we currently have no record of existing reservations.”

The bar in Forest Rise has had a turbulent recent past.

In July 2024, a police probe was launched after £4,000 in cash and stock disappeared from the pub.

South Yorkshire Police were called to the bar to probe the disappearance of money and drink under previous operators.
