The fire raged at the disused Highfields Miner’s Welfare for several hours yesterday (Tuesday, August 11) after breaking out around 9.30am.

Firefighters from Doncaster, Edlington, Dearne and Parkway battled the blaze using five pumps in a 30°C heatwave.

Despite the scorching weather, nearby residents were urged to keep their doors and windows closed due to a plume of black smoke that could be seen for miles.

The cause of the fire has not yet been revealed, but nobody is thought to have been injured.

But residents said the site had become a ‘problem area’ with several small fires there over the past year.

There were also calls for the derelict pub to be demolished.
