The yobs struck at Sandall Park, flinging a tin of red paint across the park’s iced-up lake, leading to fears that the liquid would poison fish and other animals as the ice thawed.

Instead, volunteers from the Friends of Sandall Park, the volunteer group which looks after the beauty spot, spent much of the weekend clearing the paint up.

A spokesman said: “It was a very cold and hard job clearing all the toxic paint off the ice.

“We had to have volunteers on the far bank and the near bank pulling the boat back and forth to break the thick ice up.

“It's a pity the people who do these stupid things don't consider the consequence of their actions.

“Wouldn't it be nice if the offender realised what a ridiculous thing it was to do and went into the icy water to rectify the matter?”
