Two people arrested for arson after fire rips through Doncaster Premier Inn

Two people have been arrested on suspicion of arson after an early morning fire ripped through a Doncaster town centre hotel this morning.

An investigation into the blaze at the Premier Inn is now under way and police and fire crews are still at the scene.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said that two people were arrested at the hotel this morning on suspicion of arson to endanger life.

Emergency services were called out to the 140 room hotel in High Fisher Gate at around 6.30am this morning after the fire started in a third floor room.

125 people have to be led to safety and the Market Place area in front of the hotel was cordorned off as six fire engines tackled the flames.

The fire is now out, but investigations are now under way.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Police were alerted to a fire at Premier Inn in Doncaster by the fire service at 6.44am this morning.

“Customers were evacuated by the fire service, with officers supporting the evacuation and road closures.

“No injuries were reported.

“Two people have been arrested on suspicion of arson to endanger life and enquiries are ongoing.”

A spokesman for Premier Inn said: “I can confirm that the emergency services were called to an isolated fire in the hotel.

"No guests were present in the room at the time, and the hotel was safely evacuated by the team.

"We are now assisting the fire brigade while they carry out their investigations.”
