Thorne Road has already been shut previously on a number of occasions while work takes place to install a new bridge near to the Sainsbury’s supermarket at Edenthorpe.

But the project has been hit by a number of engineering issues and the road is currently closed off again with diversions in place.

The route, normally used by hundreds of Doncaster commuters each day, is now set to stay closed until mid September.

The road closed again on August 24 as workers make another attempt on the job which has left motorists facing delays and diversions for months.

The project originally began before the coronavirus pandemic and Doncaster Council has apologised for the ongoing saga.

A spokesman said: “Engineering difficulties have forced our hand in our attempts to ensure works to the rail bridge on the West Moor Link continue without too much delay.

“We appreciate this may cause some inconvenience and will attempt to minimise disruption where possible.”

Work restarted on the project in July after earlier engineering problems and then the coronavirus pandemic caused delays to the project, which is expected to last around two years.

The roadworks are taking place on the stretch between Shaw Lane roundabout and the roundabout for the West Moor Link Road near Sainsbury’s.

The work is to replace the existing bridge and improve journey times from the West Moor Link into Doncaster.
