Highways bosses say they are treating safety as paramount and that they discovered the concerns during a routine inspection on the road.

Only the bridge section that takes the road above the main carriageway and into Mexborough will be closed by the work.

A Doncaster Council statement this evening said the bridge section of the road would be closed from 9.30am tomorrow while further review work is carried out.

The statement said: “On completion of a routine inspection of the Greens Way flyover in Mexborough, our highways team have discovered some structural concerns and a further urgent structural review is needed.

“This means the bridge will be closed from 9.30am tomorrow morning (Friday May 7) whilst this is carried out. The main A6023 Greens Way remains open in both directions.

“We apologise for the inconvenience this road closure will cause, but safety is our paramount concern and a diversion will be put in place.

“We will keep you updated with progress on this important work, including when it is safe for us to reopen the flyover.”

Officials who are organising the work say the diversion into Mexborough town centre that drivers will need to take tomorrow requires users of Leach Lane, Market Street, Church Street and Quarry Street have to access the A6023 via the east end roundabout.

The main A6023 Greens Way is the main bypass road taking traffic through Mexborough.
