Face coverings have been mandatory on public transport in England since June 15, though children aged under 11, people with certain disabilities and drivers do not have to wear one.

South Yorkshire Police said it was working with bus operators First and Stagecoach, and with the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, to remind people of the rules.

Many people have voiced their concerns about fellow passengers not wearing masks, with bus companies not asking drivers to enforce the rule.

There have been warnings about people who are exempt due to hidden disabilities facing abuse.

The campaign group Transport for All said that as of last week disabled people had been attacked 46 times by other passengers for not wearing masks.

From tomorrow, Friday, July 24, face coverings will also be compulsory in shops.
