Work has been taking place to replace the railway bridge over the A18 on Thorne Road between Clay Lane and Edenthorpe.

The road was due to re-open this week but the closure has now been extended until August 10.

A Doncaster Council spokesman said: “Due to unforeseen engineering difficulties, we have extended the closure up until Monday 10 August 2020.

“This closure will allow vital piles to be bored for the south abutment of the new bridge. Once the closure is in place it will remain there until the these foundations are complete.”

Work restarted on the project in July after earlier engineering problems and then the coronavirus pandemic caused delays to the project, which is expected to last around two years.

Motorists are advised to use other routes into Doncaster where they can to avoid delays.

The road will then have 25 night time closures from Tuesday 11 August 2020 from 10pm and 6am. The road will be open outside of these hours.

The roadworks are taking place on the stretch between Shaw Lane roundabout and the roundabout for the West Moor Link Road near Sainsbury’s.

Sainsbury’s remains open and pedestrian access is still open under the bridge.

The work is to replace the existing bridge and improve journey times from the West Moor Link into Doncaster.
