Train hits car at Doncaster level crossing causing rail disruption

The occupants of a car escaped injury after a train hit a car on a Doncaster level crossing, leading to rail disruption.

British Transport Police said that officers were called to Rossington Level Crossing just after 8pm last night following reports a train had hit a car.

However, the train only clipped the car and no-one is thought to have been injured, a BT spokesman said.

But the incident caused disruption to rail services.

In a statement, BTP said: “Officers were called to Rossington Level Crossing in Doncaster at 8.07pm this evening following reports that a train had hit a car.

“Thankfully, the vehicle was only clipped by the train and nobody is believed to have sustained any injuries.

“Officers and paramedics remain at the scene. Enquiries into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing.”

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) urged people not to travel and told customers tickets dated for Sunday will be valid for travel today.

LNER said on its website: “Major disruption between Doncaster and Grantham until the end of the day.

“The emergency services are dealing with an incident between Doncaster and Retford.

“Whilst they attend the incident, all lines will be closed.

“A limited number of LNER trains will be able to divert via Gainsborough. These trains will not be able to call at Retford.

“Major disruption is expected to trains until the end of service.”

The level crossing on Station Road is one of Doncaster’s busiest and has been the site of a number of accidents over the years.
