Cyclists including four-time Olympic gold medal winner Sir Bradley Wiggins will be on the start line for the race, which will roll through Doncaster for stage two of the event on Saturday, April 30.

The trophy is on a tour of its own ahead of the competition and it made a stop at Denaby Main Primary School on Monday.

A special assembly was held to mark the occasion and race organisers, including Doncaster Wheelers Cycling Club president Martin Maltby, were on hand to promote everything great about the tour.

Andrea Robinson, business manager at the school, said: “The children were very impressed with the trophy and were interested in learning about the race.

“They talked about the route, who will be competing and Martin brought his specialist bike in to explain how light it is and how to get the best out of it.

“The route goes very close past our school so we are all really excited about it and cant wait for it to start.

“I’m sure a lot of our pupils will be going down to watch the race with their parents. It should be a great day.”

Thousands of spectators are expected to line the streets when the peloton rolls through the centre of Conisbrough village and past the castle as part of the route. There will also be a range of stalls and a fun fair on the day.

The school is also doing its bit to promote the tour.

Andrea added: “The day before the race we will be inviting the pupils to bring their bikes into school to decorate them in yellow and blue, the colours of the tour.

“We will also be having organised bike rides in the playground.

“The school has a painted bike and we have displays up and pictures of the tour from last year. We feel like we are really getting into the spirit of the race.”
