Thousands of hens saved from slaughter after Doncaster animal rescue appeal

Thousands of hens have been saved from slaughter in Doncaster after big-hearted animal lovers came to the rescue.

Rooster Farm and Rescue launched an appeal to rehome more than 2,700 chickens – and people from across the country took up the offer and raced to save the hens.

Jodie Swann and Aaron Scott, who set up the rescue site two years ago, said: “A massive thank you to everyone who came for hens.

“We have nearly found homes for 3,000 hens. It has been a busy couple of days but well worth it.

“Thank you so much to you all. Our target was 3,000 and we saved them all from slaughter. Next week we should have a other 3,000 looking for homes.”

The appeal went viral on Facebook with people descending on the pair’s premises from across the country.

Jodie said: "We rescue ex-commercial hens that would go to slaughter for things like baby food and cheap pies.

"We opened just under two years ago when a lady reached out to us and asked for some help as she was having to shut her rescue due to personal matter.

"We said we would help as much as we can and rescued over 200 animals, geese, turkeys, chicken and rabbits.

"That's how we started an last year alone and rehomed over 2,500 ex commerical hens, 800 cockrels, turkeys, geese, ducks and kittens.

If you want to rehome a chicken all you have to do is get in touch with Rooster Farm and Rescue.

Potential owners will be asked for pictures of their set ups and if they are experienced chicken owners. Once that is done you can go to collect your chickens with a minimum donation of £2.

Jodie added: "We don't just rescue ex commercial hens, we rescue injured wildlife, rabbits, goats and pigs."
