Toby has campaigned locally for more defibrillators to be made available to people in the area for some time.

The Chesterfield store installed the life saving device to the outside of the building as part of a national campaign which saw Tesco introduce defibrillators in 907 of its largest stores.

Paul Robinson, store manager, said: “We’re delighted that Toby Perkins MP is welcoming our move to have a defibrillator installed at the store, and to have him here in store today for the unveiling.

“We’re so pleased to be doing our part in providing this vital equipment for local people. Defibrillators are vastly undersupplied and it’s so important for this equipment to be readily accessible for those who need it.”

Toby Perkins MP commented: “I’m an advocate and campaigner for increasing the availability and accessibility of defibrillators in local communities, and committed to the education of children and adults in emergency first aid.

“It’s great that Tesco Chesterfield is getting on board and is now able to provide such a vital piece of equipment for public use. Having a defibrillator to hand can mean the difference between life and death for someone suffering a sudden cardiac arrest.”

For every minute without CPR and defibrillation, a person’s chance of survival decreases by around 10 percent. 729 Tesco Extra and Superstores all over the country will be fitted with defibrillators as part of the initiative, and the retailer also plans to install the equipment in all of its 178 Metro stores over the coming weeks.

Tesco is working to improve the health of the nation through its partnership with Diabetes UK and the British Heart Foundation. The partnership supports new initiatives that will help people lead healthier, longer and more active lives.
