Stained glass sleeper car of the future arrives in North Lincolnshire

20-21 Visual Art Centre in Scunthorpe is looking forward to the arrival of a car unlike anything visitors will have seen before.

Dominic Wilcox’s Stained Glass Sleeper Car of the Future has been delighting people across the UK and will arrive tomorrow (Thursday May 21).

Although stained glass is normally associated with churches and other historic buildings, the car is a vision of what Dominic Wilcox imagines motoring will look like in the future.

The car was made as part of an exhibition in London sponsored by BMW Mini that asked designers to imagine how we will travel in 2059 – 100 years after the first MINI went into production.

Wilcox imagined that by the year 2059 – driverless cars will make current safety requirements redundant; giving car designers total freedom to make vehicles out of whatever they choose.

The designer worked with the Product Design department at Middlesex University to make a car that that is beautiful to look at and casts colour on the walls surrounding it.

The car has been on display at a number of high profile events and will be coming to 20-21 direct from The Design Museum in London where it has been on display in their entrance.

The car joins other inventions by Dominic Wilcox that have been on display at 20-21 since March as part of his ‘Variations on Normal’ exhibition.

Dominic’s Stained Glass Car will be on display at 20-21 Visual Art Centre until 11 July 2015. The gallery is open between Tuesday and Saturday 10am to 4pm and is free.

Dominic Wilcox, said: “In the future, it will be safer to drive in a driverless car than t will be in a manual car. Therefore we don’t need the protection systems that are built into contemporary cars. We can just have a shell of any design.”

We are delighted to be hosting Dominic Wilcox’ exhibition ‘Variations of Normal’ – it gives a colourful insight into the objects we use every day.
