Swinging at the Cotton Club on Wednesday, May 11 at Cast, is an action-packed show celebrating the music, dance and songs that epitomise the Cotton Club.

All the great names, including Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Fats Waller would have had the original Cotton Club pulsating through the decades of the twenties and the thirties. Dancers such as Bojangles Robinson and the Nicholas Brothers would also perform breath-taking routines on stage, to thrill those watching and add to the mood of the moment.

The atmosphere, dance and music of the Cotton Club is brought vividly back to life by the fabulous Jiving Lindy Hoppers, the world’s premier jazz dance company; and includes the Lindy Hop which has seen a resurgence in recent times. The moves have been seen in the jive on Strictly Come Dancing and has inspired sections of hip hop, street and break dancing.

An authentic jazz dance company, the award-winning Jiving Lindy Hoppers are perhaps best known for their spectacular and breathtaking performances of the Lindy Hop - the original form of jive dancing that developed in Harlem in the late 1920’s. But their talent and versatility is seen in the wide range of dances they perform that are all influenced by the authentic jazz dance tradition.

They share the bill with ‘Europe’s Hottest Jazz Orchestra’, the Harry Strutters Hot Rhythm Orchestra, featuring vocalist Marlene Hill and songs including Minnie The Moocher; C Jam Blues; The Charleston; Drum Crazy; Black Beauty; Everybody Loves My Baby; That Lindy Hop; Jubilee Stomp; It Don’t Mean A Thing If Ain’t Got That Swing … and many more.

This orchestra specialises in recreating the jazz and hot dance music of bygone days with drive and visual appeal. It has toured extensively in Britain, Europe and Scandinavia. Its music communicates the exuberance of the music and humour of the Jazz Age, using its own special arrangements of familiar tunes as well as the less well known numbers, from the repertoires of the famous bands of the period.

The whole evening is overseen by compere and vocalist Megs Etherington.

Celebrating the music, dance and songs of the legendary Cotton Club and the greats who performed there, Swinging at the Cotton Club is at Cast, Doncaster on May 11 at 7.30pm. Tickets are £19 with £17.50 concessions, and are available by calling 01302 303 959 or by visiting Cast in Doncaster
