A twinkling display of sparkling fundraising snowflakes have helped light up Sheffield Children's Hospital this Christmas and at the same time they have helped to raise a record-breaking amount towards its Emergency Department appeal.

Among the sponsors of the fundraising snowflakes were big hearted Doncaster-based firms Togel Contractors, Doncaster Sheffield Airport, Unipart Rail and Blundells.

In 2017, the hospital saw and helped to treat around 7,228 children from Doncaster. Under new building plans, the waiting room at the hospital would expand to four times its current size, with an additional triage assessment area and more treatment, consultancy and examination rooms.

More than 250 snowflakes, more than ever before, illuminated Sheffield Children's Hospital this week.

Each of the sparkling snowflakes, which each cost between £500 and £6,000 to sponsor, has seen businesses, schools, community groups and thankful families raise more than £250,000 towards the appeal.

More than 20 of those snowflakes are also lighting up Pinstone Street in Sheffield for the first time, thanks to an innovative new partnership with Sheffield City Council.

The snowflakes, which are each made from Sheffield steel, have been carefully assembled over several weeks by more than 100 kindhearted volunteers.

This year's fundraising snowflake appeal will go to towards the ambitious plans for an expanded Emergency Department at Sheffield Children's Hospital.

The hospital treats children from across South Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire. The department was built to see a maximum of 32,000 patients a year, but it now sees an incredible 60,000 every 12 months.

Corporate partnership manager at The Children's Hospital Charity, Tchad Western, added: 'A huge thank you to all our sponsors who have helped us raise a record-breaking amount for Sheffield Children's Hospital this Christmas.

'Every penny that is raised will help us in our appeal to build an expanded Emergency Department, which as a designated Major Trauma Centre, helps the hospital to treat up to 200 children a day from across the region with every possible problem imaginable.'
