Bosses at a Doncaster supermarket have called in pest control experts after a huge rat ‘the size of a kitten’ was spotted by shocked customers.

Shoppers at the Edenthorpe branch of Tesco spotted the rodent yesterday morning – and there are understood to have been a number of sightings at the store in recent days.

One customer, whose aunt witnessed the rat, said: “She is in shock.

"It was in the meat aisle – it’s a disgusting situation.”

"She screamed and ran away. It was the size of a three to four month old kitten – not your average size rat.”

Tesco confirmed it was investigating and a spokesperson said: “The safety and well-being of our colleagues and customers is our number one priority.

"We have stringent procedures to maintain the highest standards of hygiene in our stores and any potential sightings are investigated by our professional contractor.

"Rentokil have already visited our Doncaster Edenthorpe Superstore to investigate.”
