Since January, Specsavers in Hillsborough has collected an amazing 1,501 pairs of glasses through customer donations.

Residents can drop into the store on Middlewood Road and leave their unwanted specs in the dedicated collection bins to help further the cause.

Mel Mitchell, dispensing assistant, said: “Everyone in the store is thrilled that we’ve managed to collect such an amazing number of glasses.

“Vision Aid Overseas is a brilliant charity and donating old glasses is a really easy and effective way to help them further their work. If you have any more lying around in drawers or at the back of the cupboards, please do bring them in.”

The frames are recycled by the charity and the money is used to support its work in developing countries.

The aim is to improve eye health across the globe and Vision Aid Overseas estimates that 640 million people worldwide are disadvantaged by poor vision and a lack of glasses.

Specsavers has worked closely with the charity for the last decade and is continuing to do so. In this time, Specsavers has raised more than £300,000 and helped more than 13,000 patients in Zambia.

The money has been put to good use by funding many vision centres including ones currently being built in Kasama, which will serve the Northern Province and Mongu, for the Western Province. For more information about Vision Aid Overseas, visit
