Renovation of Epworth church organ is now complete

The members of Wesley Memorial Methodist Church in Epworth have finally finished the upgrade and enlargement of their 19th century church organ.

There has been an ongoing programme of events over the last two years, based around the High Street church, which has been raising money for this huge undertaking.

In total £18,000 has been raised, and spent, preserving the church organ.

This means that the organ at Wesley Memorial Church can continue to be of service to the people of Epworth for the next century.

The organ plays a big part in worship, not only on a weekly basis but also at the numerous weddings, funerals, baptisms and civic events that happen there.

Other than regular tuning, the organ had not received any major maintenance work since 1967 and, throughout the late 2000s, became increasingly unreliable to play.

A decision was made regarding the future of the 1891 Brindley and Foster instrument that started with discussions between the three church organists – Michael Bradbury, Rachel Bollons and Daniel Fields.

Spokesman for the church, Daniel explained: “The organ has not only been renovated, but enlarged with four new speaking stops which totally enhance the organ such that it is now one of the finest in North Lincolnshire. The work has been carried out by Aistrup and Hind Organ Builders of Lincoln with complete integrity at all times.”

A special celebration event is being held to mark the restoration.

On Friday, April 17, the organist of Leeds Town Hall and Leeds Minster, Dr Simon Lindley - who is also the former president of the Royal College of Organists - will give an inaugural recital.

Admission is £5 and the concert begins at 7.30pm. Admission can be paid on the door or by prior purchase of tickets from Daniel via email [email protected] or by telephoning 01724 784042.

This recital will be followed by a re-dedication service led by Reverend David Leese on Sunday, April 19, at 10.45am.
