Railway interest strong in Doncaster, collection trustees say

The hugeÂ interest in a Doncaster railway exhibition is a sure sign residents want to see the town's history in the industry recognised, according to experts in the field.

More than 11,000 people visited the Making Tracks exhibition at Doncaster Frenchgate earlier this month.

Part of the exhibition was a display of items from the Doncaster Grammar School.

One of its trustees, Dave Rogerson, was thrilled with the numbers at the exhibition.

"It was incredible. Quite incredible," he said.

The trustees say the town which built famous locomotives like the Flying Scotsman, Mallard and the Cock o' the North needs to get in touch with its railway history.

It sounds, Mr Rogerson said, like many in town would agree, if the visitor numbers were anything to go by.

"There are a lot of people interested in railways," he said.

"It's certainly and indication people in the town want to see a centre."

That centre would be a permanent home for the famous collection which was started by Doncaster Grammar School's railway society.

The collection has more than 2,000 items. It containts thousands of items including signs, nameplates, lamps and signal posts.

Much of the collection has been hidden away for years, according to the trustees.
