Popular worker at landmark Doncaster factory dies at 83

Stan Allen, who worked at the former ICI Fibres factory on Wheatley Hall Road, died at his home in Tickhill earlier this month.

An obituary for Mr Allen, who died on June 22, described him as "the beloved husband of Dorothy, loving dad of Stuart, Greg and the late Jeff."

He was also described as the "dear father in law of Kate, Saima and Dawn and also a very much-loved grandad."

The funeral service will take place at St Mary's Parish Church, Tickhill on July 12 at 1pm folllowed by burial in the churchyard.

The huge nylon spinning plant was demolished in 2000.

The distinctive frontage, known locally as The White Lady, disappeared along with the brick-built chimney which still bore the name of former owners British Nylon Spinners up until its demolition.

The factory was first opened in 1929 by German firm Bemberg, became BNS and later transferred to chemical giants ICI before being bought by DuPont in 1993. It closed down in 1999.
