Yorkshire Labour politicians write to Chancellor Rishi Sunak demanding to see exit strategy for leaving next coronavirus lockdown

On Wednesday, MPs backed a four-week lockdown in England to combat coronavirus, which will kick in at midnight.
In the letter to Chancellor Rishi Sunak, the region’s Labour politicians state: “We have faced months of restrictions and the truth is that morale is very low here because of Government failures.

Hide Ad“We ask to see the exit plan out of this lockdown and, if that involves a return to living under tougher restrictions for longer, what support our businesses, NHS, public health and individuals can expect to receive.”
They make a series of demands of the Chancellor, including setting up localised test, trace and isolate.
They go on to say: “We have lost valuable time in this battle against Covid when Labour’s call for an earlier circuit breaker would not only have slowed the rate of transmission but would have minimised the impact on the economy and prevented the loss of many jobs.
“We cannot afford for any more time to be wasted or plans to be made and scrapped.

Hide Ad“We need to see concrete plans for what happens when this lockdown is lifted and we need to see them now.”
In the House of Commons on Wednesday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the lockdown will expire automatically on December 2, after which the three tiers of regional restrictions will be re-imposed.
Mr Johnson said he hopes ‘very much’ to ‘get this country going again’ in the run up to Christmas.
