Edlington Leisure Centre: Councillor calls for "action" as Doncaster Council seeks demolition contractor
A Reform UK councillor has called on the City of Doncaster Council to provide “real progress” after the Labour Mayor announced funding for a new leisure centre in her ward.
Councillor Joan Briggs said residents in Edlington had “heard too many words over the years” and promises have failed to bear fruit in the past.
She told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS): “What we need now is action. Real timelines, real progress and real delivery.
“I have been pushing for proper investment in our leisure facilities for a long time. Residents deserve modern facilities – not repeated announcements and endless delay.”

In November 2025, the Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones, and her cabinet approved proposals for a new leisure centre in Edlington.
The current centre is to be demolished and a new facility will be built with a 25m swimming pool, changing facilities, wellbeing suite with Innerva equipment, pool viewing gallery and a food and drink offering.
It is investment Cllr Briggs suggested has taken far too long to come forward.

She said: “This cannot drift again. I will continue pressing the council until work actually starts and the people of Edlington see the results.”
In a statement to the LDRS, Doncaster Council revealed it had gone out to tender for a contractor to demolish the former Edlington Leisure Centre, making space for the new facility. This tender process closes in late March 2026.
Mayor Ros Jones said: “This is a major step forward to delivering a brand-new Leisure facility for Edlington that will include a 25m swimming pool, changing facilities, wellbeing suite with Innerva equipment, pool viewing gallery and food and drink offer.
“We have listened to residents throughout this process, which is why I am delighted to see that our new leisure facility for Edlington will include a 25m swimming pool. I know how important this was from the feedback we received, and it was essential that we went back, looked at this and made the relevant changes.”
The council said the construction of the new Edlington Leisure Centre was projected to cost £6.5million with a timeline to be confirmed once the site has been cleared.
