Doncaster residents pay over £185million in council tax in 2025/26

Council tax only makes up a small part of a local authorities total income.

The City of Doncaster Council lost out on more than £11.5million in council tax income in 2025/26, amid the rising cost of living.

The local authority earned £185,341,845.88 from council tax paid by local residents in the recent financial year – up from £167m in 2024/25.

However, £11.5m was “due but not collected” during the same period.

Debbie Hogg, Executive Director for Corporate Resources, said: “Payment of council tax is important to support City of Doncaster Council to provide essential services to our communities and we are committed to ensuring that all due council tax is collected.

“We take a firm and compassionate approach to recouping these funds, balancing the need for collection with an understanding of individual circumstances as people may be facing financial pressures from rising living costs.

“We encourage anyone who is having difficulty in paying council tax to get in touch with us at the earliest opportunity. They may be able to access support such as the Local Council Tax Reduction scheme and the Local Assistance Scheme which provides a much-needed safety net for those on the lowest income. Further details about these and how to get in contact can be found on our website.”

Doncaster boasts the lowest council tax rates in South Yorkshire and one of the lowest in the country.

The council’s combined capital and revenue budgets for 2025/26 were just shy of £900m and the vast majority of council spending is funded by a settlement passed down from the Government.

Capital budgets are investment in assets and infrastructure, such as roads and regeneration projects, whilst revenue spending is for the day-to-day operational costs of the authority.

At the budget setting meeting in February 2025, the council projected that its income from council tax could reach £149.1m, meaning the authority received nearly £40m more than expected.

For 2026/27, the council projects to receive just over £155m in council tax income. Council tax was increased for this current financial year by two per cent, after Reform UK forced through an amendment dropping the hike down from the maximum 4.99 per cent proposed by the Labour Mayor, Ros Jones.

The combined capital and revenue budgets for 2026/27 are just below £1billion.
