DONCASTER: Calls to bring 'laughing gas' ban into town centre

Nick Allen, Conservative councillor for Bessacarr, has called for the use of nitrous oxide to be included in the proposed Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) renewal in the town centre.

The capsules are frequently used in the food industry but they are used by some people who fill a balloon and inhale the contents to get a high.

Laughing gas filled balloons are often seen in party destinations abroad popular with young Brits.

There is no penalty for possession but supply and production can come with a seven year prison sentence, an unlimited fine or both.

Coun Allen has said the capsules have been spotted more regularly during lockdown around the Lakeside area of Doncaster while out on litter picks.

Doncaster Council is currently consulting on a PSPO for the town centre which aims to extend the ban on rough sleeping, begging, alcohol and drug consumption.

“I’ve read the survey and I can see question 9 deals with the prohibition on drug use. This should also be extended to include the use of substances contained in the capsules. It might, however, be difficult to implement,” Coun Allen said.

“But those little canisters are causing such a nuisance across our town. In my ward, people do not want to see those dumped metal canisters all over Lakeside.

”It makes the area look bad and something has to be done as this so-called ‘legal high’ is not regulated properly. Local people should use the consultation on the PSPO to make their views known.”

According to drug helpline Talk to Frank, Nitrous Oxide slows down the brain and the body's responses. The effects of the drug varies depending on how much has been inhaled.

Taking nitrous oxide can cause feelings of euphoria, relaxation and calmness, fits of giggles and laughter – hence the nickname.

Nitrous oxide use is also referred to as Noz, Hippie Crack, Chargers and Whippits.
