Tory Don Valley MP Nick Fletcher said Doncaster should be allowed to drop down a tier if infection rates fall and other areas like Sheffield, with a large university population, remain high.

Mr Fletcher also said should Doncaster be placed into Tier 3 with the rest of South Yorkshire, then the borough ‘should get its fair share in additional funding’ and it should not be ‘syphoned off to other regions’.

Both Labour MPs Rosie Winterton and Ed Miliband said if the science necessitates Doncaster moving into Tier 3, ‘then that is what should happen’.

But they added any move should come with ‘proper economic support for workers and businesses’.

Latest figures show Doncaster has had 4,410 positive cases of Covid-19 with 1,713 coming in the month of October.

The month of September returned 613 positive tests for coronavirus.

Don Valley Conservative MP Nick Fletcher, said: “I have been watching developments closely and I am concerned Doncaster is being grouped in with Sheffield, and I have made this known to Ministers and the Mayor of the Sheffield City Region. I do understand the concern which businesses have, especially as we head towards Christmas.

Therefore, I will be working hard to make sure that Doncaster gets the funding it requires, while supporting the Government’s fundamental objective to keep our loved ones safe.

“Can I urge all Doncaster residents to adhere to the rules. As difficult as they currently are, they are the only way in which we can come through this pandemic and ensure we return to normal as quickly as possible.

“This will allow us to see loved ones again and let the Government refocus its energies on its levelling up agenda in 2021.”

In a joint statement from Doncaster’s Labour MPs Ed Miliband and Rosie Winterton, they said: "As Doncaster MPs, we believe public health restrictions must be led by the science. If the science necessitates Doncaster moving into Tier 3 then that is what should happen to protect Doncaster people.

"But it is essential this is backed up by proper economic support for workers and businesses, so that we do everything we can to help Doncaster firms and save jobs.

"We are working closely with the Mayor of the Sheffield City Region Dan Jarvis and the Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones to get the best possible deal for Doncaster residents and businesses."
