Tributes paid after senior councillor dies following short illness

A senior Doncaster councillor who was a serving member on the cabinet has sadly passed away.

Mayor Ros Jones announced that Coun Nuala Fennelly passed away after a short illness.

Coun Fennelly was cabinet member for children, young people and schools and served on several of the council’s committees.

Paying tribute, Mayor Jones said: “I am devastated by the news that Coun Nuala Fennelly, cabinet member for young people & schools, has passed away after a short illness.

“She was a dedicated champion of children & young people in Doncaster I will miss Nuala greatly as a colleague and a friend.

“Nuala carried out her role with passion, dedication and loyalty. She was hugely respected by council staff, fellow councillors and partners.

“Her humanity touched us all. Nuala challenged us to do better for our children. I know she will be greatly missed by so many people.”

The news prompted more tributes on social media.

Adam Dale, CEO of Leger Education Trust, said: “I am so shocked by this and our thoughts are with her family. She was such a powerful and passionate promoter of Doncaster and its young people. A great loss to us all.”

Anthony Fitzgerald, one of the vaccine leads for Doncaster NHS, added: “Very sad news – condolences to all who knew and worked with Nuala.”

Jacqueline Wilson posted: “This is heartbreaking news. Nuala was a wonderful woman and a true champion of children. She was one of the kindest people I’ve ever met. Rest in peace Nuala – you are much missed and fondly remembered.”
