Both Doncaster North MP Ed Miliband and Rosie Winterton, member for Doncaster Central, said the report from the Equality & Human Rights Commission (EHRC) was ‘unequivocal in its findings’ and welcomed the party’s move to adopt the watchdog’s recommendations in full.

The human rights commission found Labour was responsible for ‘unlawful’ harassment and discrimination during Mr Corbyn's tenure in charge of the party.

A party spokesman said he was being suspended ‘for a failure to retract’ his words.

“Labour badly let down Jewish people by failing to properly tackle antisemitism, and it is right that the Party has committed to implementing the EHRC's recommendations in full. This was a shameful chapter in Labour's history and we must turn the page and ensure it never happens again.

"Jeremy Corbyn was suspended following his comments about the report, and now a formal process will be followed. It would be inappropriate for us to comment whilst the process is ongoing."

Mr Corbyn has been backed by Doncaster Labour councillors Tosh and Nikki McDonald.

They said that they were ‘appalled at the suspension’ and that the former leader was a ‘life-long anti-racist who has been ‘demonised by the mainstream media’.
