It’s not known how much money has been earmarked but this is one of a number of projects that will benefit from the Government’s Town Fund. The borough has initially received £1.5 million, split between Doncaster and Stainforth.

Neil Armstrong, senior programme and project manager at DMBC, said: “The gateway on Chequer Road to Elmfield Park is not attractive and lacks visibility from the road. It has a steel barrier gate and there is damage to the stonework entrance.

“This is a key entrance to the park from the town centre and these enhancement works would complement the Transforming Cities Fund works at the Bennetthorpe entrance and the existing improvements of the route through the park from Bennetthorpe to Chequer Road.

“Other entrance improvements will also be considered as part of the proposal.”

On the tennis courts, officers say while funding was previously secured to install permanent steel nets, money was not available for resurfacing. As part of the proposal, the courts will now be resurfaced with thermoplastic markings to replace the concrete areas.

As part of the same Government scheme, nearby Town Fields will also have a selection of new benches, bins after being damaged due to vandalism.

Funds will also be made available to plant more trees which were damaged from previous storms.
