The National Police Air Service, which operates a fixed wing aeroplane from Doncaster Sheffield Airport, sent the plane to Bentley because of concerns for a man in the area.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: “Police received a call at 2.39pm yesterday afternoon (Thursday December 3) with reports of concern for the safety of a man in the Churchfield Close area of Bentley.

“Officers carried out further searches and enquiries, but the man was not located.”

The Doncaster base is one of 14 National Police Air Service air bases. The planes travel the length and breadth of England and Wales and respond to the same range of tasks as the helicopters.

They have faster flying speeds and are able to spend longer in the air.
