Why the Queen’s address to the UK during coronavirus outbreak is so significant

The Queen is set to address the nation in a special broadcast this weekend after urging the UK to work ‘as one’ in the battle against coronavirus.

The televised address of solidarity from Windsor Castle will air this Sunday (April 5) after unprecedented events threw the country into lockdown.

Special addresses from the monarch during troubled periods are a rarity- this will be just the Queen’s fourth speech during her 68-year-reign, outside of her annual Christmas Day broadcasts.

Fears for the Queen’s health were sparked when one of her footmen reportedly contracted the virus- however Buckingham Palace said earlier this week that the monarch was in ‘good health’.

Prince Charles tested positive for COVID-19 on March 12, but has since recovered.

The address will be shown on the royal social media channels as well as on TV and radio, including @RoyalFamily on Twitter.
