Doncaster fell silent at a string of parades, events and commemorations to mark Remembrance Sunday in the city.

Services were held at war memorials across the borough in a series of moving wreath-laying ceremonies, with further events planned outside the Mansion House for Armistice Day tomorrow.

Doncaster Rovers kicked off commemorations with a two minute silence before Saturday’s game with Barnsley at the Eco Power Stadium, with a number of veterans and military personnel in attendance.

On Sunday, hundreds gathered to pay their respects at the War Memorial in Bennetthorpe, with civic dignataries laying poppy wreaths before a parade to Doncaster Minster for the annual Remembrance service.

Doncaster Central Labour MP Sally Jameson said: “We honour the bravery and sacrifice of all those who have served and given their lives for our freedom. We will remember them.”

Doncaster East and Isle of Axholme MP Lee Pitcher shared: "You couldn’t help but be moved by the services we saw all around the country.

“Standing with our community in Thorne Memorial Park, and after at St Nicholas Church this year was emotional.

“As the crowds came out, it was the most beautifully poignant service to remember and give thanks to all those who fought for our freedom.

“We will remember them.”

Meanwhile, in a powerful demonstration of community unity, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association Doncaster of Baitul Baseer Mosque joined members from various fields and backgrounds of the Doncaster community at the Edlington War Memorial

Standing side-by-side with local dignitaries, veterans, service members, and residents, representatives from the Baitul Baseer Mosque laid a wreath in a solemn act of collective remembrance, honouring the supreme sacrifice made by servicemen and women in past conflicts.

The President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association Doncaster, Bilal Mahmood said: “We stood as one with our fellow residents in Doncaster, from all walks of life, to honour the courage and sacrifice of those who gave everything for our peace and freedom.

“This shared act of remembrance reinforces our common humanity and our shared hopes for a peaceful world.”

Services for Armistice Day will commence outside the Mansion House on Tuesday 11 November at 10.55 am and the service will include a bugler playing the Last Post and Reveille and the traditional Act of Homage.
