Upset parents of pupils at a Doncaster school have set up a crowdfunding campaign after a ‘very serious’ flood wrecked classrooms, destroying resources and work.

Year 4 pupils at Saltersgate Junior School in Scawsby have been told to stay away after a pipe burst in freezing temperatures over the weekend, wrecking carpets and furniture.

Headteacher Paul Chambers described the flood as ‘very serious’ and said that it had caused ‘extensive damage.’

Now parents have rallied around to help the school in the run up to Christmas following the disaster by setting up a funding campaign.

Organiser Amy Ellis: “Saltersgate suffered a burst pipe due to freezing temperatures.

"This resulted in the year four classrooms being wholly flooded and everything in the classrooms being destroyed.

"The children have had to miss school on Monday and Tuesday due to the clean up.

"They are due to head back on Wednesday. Although the bricks, mortar, fixed desks are replaceable via insurance, the resources are not.

“As it is so close to Christmas, which I appreciate, Christmas or not, we are all going through very troubling times.

"I am asking for a small donation so the school can replace the resources such as reading books, soft cushions and bean bags in the reading corners, maths resources, SEND resources, and anything the insurance company cannot and will not replace.

“All children at every school, have had the hardship of Covid-19.

"Saltersgate Junior now has the difficulty of resuming school to the best they can with limited resources.

"They will unfortunately not be returning to their classrooms until spring term next year and therefore, we hope we can make it as normal as possible until this happens.”

In a letter to parents, Mr Chambers said: “As you will now no doubt be aware, we have had a very serious flood in all Year 4 classrooms and corridor caused by a burst water pipe which has been leaking all weekend.

"The carpets and fixed furniture have been damaged beyond repair and many of the children's classroom resources have been destroyed.

“As a result, Year 4 will be taught as a whole year group in the school's Dining Hall until, I imagine, the spring half term 2023.

“Thank you for your understanding and support with this matter.”
