Hope for flood protection for Doncaster caravans as concerns raised over where people can evacuate during pandemic

Doncaster mobile home residents say work to raise caravans to protect against floods cannot come soon enough.

Nick Badham, resident and warden at Willow Bridge caravan park, near Bentley, said Doncaster Council officials had been on site on Monday with sandbags.

He said: “We’ve heard they are also looking to raise caravans up in a couple of weeks so they are higher off the ground.

"That can’t happen soon enough. Everyone on the site would love to see their homes lifted.

"When I looked at the river this morning, the level was not at the first banking yet, and there are two bankings.

"But there are quite a lot of worried people here, including myself. It’s only been 14 months since the last floods.

"People are worried about what they do if the river does come up, with the pandemic, as well. If it comes up, where do you go, if you can’t go to your family?”

Doncaster has been placed on flood alert by the Environment Agency, as large amounts of rain are expected over several days due to Storm Christoph.

And a major incident has been declared by mayor Ros Jones because of concerns over possible floods.

Mrs Jones said: “A major incident has been declared at a South Yorkshire Level in preparation for potential flooding over the next few days.

“Preparations are being put in place for potential flooding, emergency protocols were instigated on Sunday and will run alongside our Covid response.

“I do not want people to panic, but flooding is possible so please be prepared.”
