Former Mayor of Doncaster and prominent local councillor dies at 93

A former Mayor of Doncaster has died at the age of 93.

Bill Gillies, who served as mayor in 1991-92 died peacefully in Doncaster Royal Infirmary, an obituary said.

Mr Gillies and his late brother Ron were both prominent figures in local politics at Doncaster Council during the 1980s and 1990s.

Mr Gillies died on January 31 and the obituary described him as the ‘much loved father of Bill, Carolyn, Alan and Debbie, stepfather of Christian and Dawn and grandfather and great grandfather.”

His wife, Mary, who served as mayoress, died in 2018 while Ron, who also served as mayor in 1988, died aged 74 in 2002.

A family spokesman said: “Both Bill and Ron loyally served their local communities for many years and worked hard to improve the lives of local people.”

The funeral service will take place at Campsall Church on February 26 at 11am followed by burial at Brodsworth Church.
