Former Rovers star El Hadji Diouf was among a string of footballers to pay their respects to the Argentine soccer idol who died on Wednesday at the age of 60 following a heart attack.

Diouf, who played for Doncaster during the controversial ‘experiment’ season, said that it was Maradona that helped him to be named as one of 20th century’s best players.

"When he saw me play, I've no idea how he got my phone number, but he rang to congratulate and encourage me.

"The fact that I am one of the 100 best players of the 20th century is thanks to him.

"He fought for this to happen, despite not being African himself.

"It was because he knew how to recognise and and appreciate another person's ability."

Diouf also played for Liverpool, Bolton, Sunderland, Blackburn, Rangers and Leeds during his career as well as playing for Senegal.

He added: "Today the entire world has suffered a loss. Diego made the whole world happy, and embodied respect.

"Besides, he was a true patriot."

Diouf scored six goals in 22 appearances for Rovers during the 2011-12 season and was linked with a series of controversial incidents during his playing career in England.

In 2018, he launched a bid to become president of Senegal.
