The woman posted in a community Facebook group that she had reported “a bloke with a blue clipboard who walked off as soon as he heard the dog bark” to South Yorkshire Police after he knocked on her door at a house in Balby.

Detailing the incident, she wrote: “He didn’t go to either of my neighbours. This has been reported.”

When others questioned the seriousness of the incident, she replied: “It was the way he shot off as soon as my dog barked. He didn’t give me a chance to answer the door.

"There are always bogus people around and my street has a lot of elderly residents, sorry for looking out for them.”

One user responded: “He may not like dogs, he could have been bitten in the past doing his job.”

When she replied: “So why not wait at the gate?,” the response came back: “He may not have known you had a dog.”

“Wow, someone knocking on a door, shocking,” said a post.

Another joked: “Did you not know its now an actual criminal offence? Helicopter and the are Army are now looking for him – throw the key away.

"How dare he be afraid of dogs?”

The woman replied: “Honestly, wouldn’t have posted if I didn’t think he was dodgy. I mentioned it to a few people and they said it didn’t sound right.
