The Conservative MP for Don Valley was forced to apologise after sharing a selfie on the streets of Thorne – with Christmas trees and decorations in the background.

However, because decorations have yet to be put up in the town, eagle eyed spotters realised Mr Fletcher had simply recycled a picture of himself from last year, leading critics to accuse him of faking visits.

It was the third time he had used the photo in connection with a visit to Thorne.

Mocked up photos suggested Nick Fletcher was present at the moon landing and had also been hanging out with the Spice Girls. He was ridiculed on social media, with pictures mocking the incident and showing him at a number of world famous events.

One showed him supposedly at the 1985 Live Aid concert at Wembley Stadium, while another suggested he was present when Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot in the moon in 1969.

Others showed him hanging out with the Spice Girls while another showed him with the Star Trek crew, alongside Jean Luc Picard on the deck of the Starship Enterprise.

Mr Fletcher shared the photo on his Facebook page on Wednesday with the caption: “Great to spend the afternoon in Thorne. It is good to see it thriving again after a tough year.”

The MP said he ‘forgot’ to take a photo during his trip and says it is not the first time he has re-used pictures when visiting parts of his constituency.

In a brief statement, he said: “Having spent the afternoon walking round Thorne with a local business man and calling at a local café for a coffee, I forgot to take a photo.

“This is not the first time I have reused a photo when forgetting to take one and I am sure it will not be the last.”

He also amended his Facebook post, writing: “Apologies, forgot to take a photo on my walk about. Will make sure I take one when I’m back again next week. Look forward to seeing you all soon.”

Constituents were quick to pick up on the gaffe.

One wrote: “When you like a selfie so much you've used the same picture three times...”

Another posted: “How come Xmas trees are up when not putting them up till after 12th?”
