Doncaster MP launches campaign to improve bus services

A Doncaster MP has launched a new campaign to improve bus services across the Isle of Axholme, starting with a series of focus groups to gather views from local residents.

Lee Pitcher, Labour MP for Doncaster East and the Isle of Axholme, has launched the project called Better Bus Services for the Isle of Axholme which will bring together residents, workers and local bus users to better understand how current services are working and where improvements are needed to better connect communities across the Isle.

The campaign comes at a time when major changes are planned for bus services in neighbouring South Yorkshire, where a franchising system is due to be introduced from 2027, giving local leaders control over routes, fares and service standards.

Mr Pitcher said it was vital that communities in the Isle of Axholme are not left behind as improvements are made elsewhere.

Doncaster MP Lee Pitcher has launched a campaign to improve bus services in the Isle of Axholme.

“People across the Isle of Axholme have told me time and again that better public transport is needed locally,” he said.

He added: “While South Yorkshire is moving ahead with bus franchising and taking control of its network, I am determined to make sure the Isle of Axholme is not left behind.”

The groups will take place in person at locations across the Isle of Axholme, with each session bringing together small groups of residents to share their experiences.

The findings will be compiled into a report that will be shared with North Lincolnshire Council, Greater Lincolnshire Combined County Authority and local bus operators, with the aim of improving services and ensuring they better reflect the needs of local communities.

“This is about building a bus network that works for local people,” Mr Pitcher said.

“That means listening first, understanding the challenges, and then working with providers to deliver practical improvements.”

He added: “Better buses can provide access to jobs, education, healthcare and opportunity. Getting this right could make a real difference to people’s everyday lives.”

Residents interested in taking part in the groups are encouraged to contact Mr Pitcher’s office at: [email protected] for further details on how to get involved and offer up their views.
