It certainly doesn’t make happy reading for Rotherham – which was ranked 81st out of 82 for having one of Britain’s unhealthiest high streets.

Sheffield fared far better, landing 15th spot while Doncaster was ranked 46th. Barnsley was not included in the rundown.

The survey comes as health concerns continue to grow in the UK as the NHS report that 63% of adults were labelled overweight or obese.

As a result, Bankrate.com/uk were eager to discover the heathiest and unhealthiest UK high streets in 2020.

The firm created The HealthRate index, analysing the amenities surrounding major UK high streets, awarding each city a score based on the healthy life choices, social interaction and mental wellbeing they promote.

York is home to the healthiest high street in the UK while the unhealthiest high street can be found in Peterborough.

The survey said that Rotherham's low score can be attributed to the lack of libraries and leisure centres.

Bankrate also found that homes near a ‘healthy’ high street are valued at £103,491 more on average.

In 2006, when TV chef Jamie Oliver launched his healthy school dinners campaign, parents in the town started taking lunchtime fast food orders to school pupils, with pictures of chips being pushed through school railings shown around the world.

He set up the Ministry of Food in the town - the aim being to show people how to cook tasty, healthy meals.
