One of Doncaster's oldest people celebrates 105th birthday after beating coronavirus

One of Doncaster’s oldest citizens is celebrating her 105th birthday today after surviving coronavirus.

Pat Mackay, who was born during the First World War, is marking her big day after recently surviving COVID-19.

Daughters Jean Mowbray and Liz Gill have paid tribute to their mum on her big day, describing her as ‘a truly strong woman.’

Born in Larne, Northern Ireland, 1915, moving to London to live with her aunt and uncle when she was six after her dad lost his job.

She went to work in a cafe at Epsom Racecourse and a store in London where staff had to hide in the basement during WW2 bombing raids.

She joined the ATS when she was 29 and helped bring down numerous German V-bombs and planes.

She met her late husband Sam and in 1947, they married and moved to Doncaster.

She has five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
