New faces take up roles

Robbie Robson is Head Boy, with Connie Barnes as Head Girl, Patrick Axe as Deputy Head Boy and Freya Trippett as Deputy Head Girl.

The academy has its own student council that has a strong voice with regard to school policies.

South Axholme is busy preparing for its new sixth form that will open in September, and an induction team building day for sixth form applicants is planned for the beginning of July.

Those who join the sixth form will be expected to first gain six GCSEs in grades A to C, and they will be required to wear dark-coloured business dress.

Other upcoming school dates include enrichment days on July 1 and 2, when students get the opportunity to try new activities or study particular subjects in more depth.

South Axholme academy is also one of 97 secondary schools who have signed up to receive life-saving training from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust.

The Trust is to visit secondary schools across the region later this year on restart a Heart Day to teach cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to around 20,000 children in what will be the biggest event of its kind ever seen in the world.

YAS held its first mass CPR training event last year as part of Restart a Heart Day when more than 11,000 schoolchildren at 50 schools received CPR training. This year is set to be a much bigger affair.

Organiser Jason Carlyon, who is a Clinical Development Manager for Yorkshire Ambulance Service, based in North Yorkshire, said: “Over 30,000 people suffer cardiac arrests outside of hospital in the UK every year.

“If this happens in front of a bystander who starts CPR immediately before the arrival of the ambulance, the patient’s chances of survival double.

“Bystander CPR can really make a difference and I’m thrilled that many secondary schools have agreed to open their doors and let our staff and volunteers pass on their life-saving skills to pupils.”
