New consultant joins the team at Scunthorpe and Goole hospitals

He is the only consultant at the two hospitals to specialise in adult foot and ankle surgery and is hoping to be able to help local patients in improving their quality of life.

Mr Dakshinamurthy Sunderamoorthy underwent his medical training in India before moving to the UK in 1998 to complete his specialist training in orthopaedics in Wales and Merseyside. He went onto complete a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery at Leeds University Teaching Hospitals with Mr Nick Harris. He has also done a post CCT senior fellow post doing lower limb arthroplasty at Swindon’s Great Western Hospital.

Talking about why he wanted to be an orthopaedic and trauma consultant he said: “It is a dynamic specialty with a good mix of outpatient and inpatient work. I am interested in research and audit and there is a great deal of scope to do basic science and clinical research in orthopaedics. Advances are always happening in orthopaedics and trauma to keep me interested.

“Also my father had a total hip replacement when he was quite young and I saw firsthand the big impact it had on his quality of life. It is very satisfying being able to help patients become pain free and improve their quality of life.”

Mr Sunderamoorthy has been a consultant since 2012 and jumped at the chance to work at Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust. He said: “I have worked in the Yorkshire region so know the Northern Lincolnshire and East Riding areas well.

“I knew there wasn’t a foot or ankle surgeon at either Scunthorpe or Goole hospitals so I was attracted to work in the Trust. I wish to develop the foot and ankle service and complement the existing lower limb service for the benefit of local patients.”

He has worked at a variety of hospitals across the country including the Royal Derby Hospital, Mid Yorkshire Hospitals, Nottingham University Hospitals and Leeds University Teaching Hospitals.

Mr Sunderamoorthy added: “I have received a warm welcome from my colleagues, the management and the orthopaedic team. I look forward to working at the Trust as a team to develop the department in the short, medium and long term and provide quality services to patients that I treat.”

Mr Sunderamoorthy will be working closely with his Grimsby-based colleague Mr Sairam Alavala to develop foot and ankle techniques and to undertake case reviews to support patients accessing their specialist services.
