Nayana, of Sheffield, is '˜one to watch' in technology awards

The 15-year old Sheffield High School pupil is one of four finalists shortlisted in the ‘One to Watch Category’ of the sixth annual FDM Everywoman in Technology Awards in association with techUK.

Nayana, from Ecclesall, has been recognised for her commitment to computer science and her ability to enthuse and motivate others in the subject. Three years ago she launched Sheffield High School’s Hackettes club for girls aged 11-13. The popular lunchtime club introduces pupils to Scratch animation, coding and e-safety.

More recently, Nayana has partnered with another student to set up a similar club, which she is hoping to run for local primary school pupils.

Headmistress, Valerie Dunsford, said: “Nayana’s passion for computing and coding has had an enormous impact throughout the school. She has been instrumental in the school introducing Computer Science at GCSE from 2016 to satisfy the interest she has generated among our younger students.

“Nayana has been truly inspirational to other pupils and we are delighted that her passion and work in this area has been recognised.”

The prestigious award will be presented at a ceremony on February 23, 2016 at the London Hilton on Park Lane.

Nayana said: “I am so excited and truly honoured to have been shortlisted for this award. My teachers have been really supportive and encouraged me to develop my interests in technology over the past few years. I can’t wait to go to London and meet all the other amazing people who have been shortlisted for these awards.”

Everywoman aims to uncover success stories and raise the profile of role models who go on to positively influence others. Clients include companies from a diverse range of sectors.
