Measures taken to improve Tickhill's flood management

As part of the City of Doncaster Council’s flood alleviation schemes, routine inspections carried out showed that the original gate was failing to function properly.

Therefore, a new design needed to be developed and implemented, which will protect local assets and properties near to Mill Dam, a popular community asset.

An overflow style structure, a tilting weir, which can automatically adjust the water level by varying the penning level, has been installed. It has been described as a “gentler” option for water control and any debris passing through flows over the top of the gate, therefore the risk of trapping is far less.

The new weir can be controlled remotely, using improved technology and CCTV system which will allow for a more efficient responses in the event of a flood.

Councillor Mark Houlbrook, who is the cabinet member for sustainability, said, “We’re really pleased to be able to deliver the latest part of the flood alleviation schemes in Tickhill.

"Unfortunately we can’t control water or the elements but we can implement solutions to help manage it.”

He concluded: “Works are ongoing in areas upstream to divert water away from the village and I’d like to personally thank the local community for their patience and understanding while this scheme has been carried out.”
