Thorne Road near to Sainsbury’s at Edenthorpe will be closed for a series of night time closures from November 23 to December 11 and motorists are being advised to use other routes while the work takes place.

The road will be shut from the Shaw Lane roundabout near Clay Lane to the West Moor Link Road roundabout near to the Toby Carvery and supermarket between 10pm and 6am each day.

The road will be open at all other times but will be reduced to one lane in each direction.

Work on the scheme to widen the road, replace the bridge and improve journey times started in July 2019 but has been hit by a series of engineering snags.

The latest closures are to allow the safe construction of the south abutment walls and associated works.

Sainsbury’s will be open during the works as will its access. Diversion routes to guide people around the works will be in place and pedestrian access will be maintained under the bridge.

A Doncaster Council spokesman said: “We know it’s frustrating and hope this explains the delays. Please bear with us, it will be a big improvement once complete.”

“The timings of the works have been planned during school holidays, overnight and at weekends where we can to minimise any disruption. However, as is the case with schemes of this scale and complexity there will be some impact on road users and people are asked to carefully plan their journeys and, importantly, allow more time to get to their destination.”

Work restarted on the project in July after earlier engineering problems and then the coronavirus pandemic caused delays to the project, which is expected to last around two years.

The roadworks are taking place on the stretch between Shaw Lane roundabout and the roundabout for the West Moor Link Road near Sainsbury’s.

The work is to replace the existing bridge and improve journey times from the West Moor Link into Doncaster.
