Latest: Firefighters still on site this morning after major blaze on industrial estate near Doncaster

Firefighters were last night telling residents to keep windows closed after a large fire near Doncaster.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said five engines were tackling the blaze on Plum Tree Road, Bircotes last night, at the height of the fire, and firefighters are still on the scene this morning.

A spokesman said this morning: “This incident is still ongoing and we are now in the damping down stage. There is one appliance still on the scene.”

She said the buildings surveyor at Bassetlaw Council had been contacted to see if they would be able to go inside the building where the fire happened to investigate the cause of the blaze.

Crews from several fire stations were called to the blaze at around 5.30pm, with advice which was issued to nearby residents to close windows remaining in place well into the night.

At 9pm they tweeted: “The incident is starting to scale down, however we are still asking people to avoid the area and to keep all doors and windows closed.”

They had earlier said: “Five appliances are currently dealing with a large fire on Plum Tree Road, Bircotes. Smoke may be seen from some distance away."

Plum Tree Road is an industrial estate which includes a number of businesses on the site.

It is close to the border of Nottinghamshire and Doncaster and several villages in the south of the borough. The industrial estate is off the A631 Tickhill Road, which is the main road which runs between Bawtry and Tickhill.
