St John Ambulance in Doncaster and Barnsley is calling on local people to step forward and volunteer, helping to deliver life‑saving first aid and build stronger, safer communities.

Organisers are appealing for new volunteers to join in a variety of rewarding roles, including Emergency Responders, Community First Aiders, and Community Volunteers.

No matter your background, there is a role where you can make a real difference.

Emergency Responders are trained volunteers who provide advanced first aid and life‑saving care at events and during emergencies. As an Emergency Responder, you will:

  • Deliver first aid and advanced life‑saving treatment
  • Work alongside ambulance services and other emergency responders
  • Reassure and support people in their most vulnerable moments
  • Represent St John Ambulance at major events and in the local community
  • Enhancing your own first aid skills
  • Sharing those skills with others
  • Raising awareness of St John Ambulance locally
  • Fundraising and marketing
  • Community engagement projects
  • Fellowship Group activities

From minor injuries to life‑threatening emergencies, Emergency Responders are there when it matters most – making the difference between panic and reassurance, pain and comfort, and even between lives lost and lives saved.

St John Ambulance is also seeking Community First Aiders who are passionate about helping others and strengthening community resilience.

Whether you are new to first aid or already have experience you wish to share, this role offers the chance to patrol events, provide first aid advice, and deliver potentially life‑saving care until emergency services arrive.

Your actions could save a life – and your calm presence could mean the difference between fear and reassurance.

St John Ambulance is also actively recruiting Community Volunteers to support its vital work behind the scenes.

These roles are ideal for people interested in: Community Volunteers frequently support frontline teams by making refreshments, running cake stalls or tombolas, assisting at events, and taking part in social activities – all while helping St John Ambulance continue its life‑saving mission.

No prior experience is required. Volunteers receive free training, ongoing support, and the opportunity to gain new skills, confidence, and lasting friendships.

All volunteer roles are now live on the national St John Ambulance website www.sja.org.uk

A spokesman said: “Volunteering with St John Ambulance is a hugely rewarding experience, offering the chance to learn new skills, meet new people, and be part of something truly meaningful.”
