John Buckley's Rovers Blog: '˜Throwback' Matty Blair gives us something different

What a brilliant bit of wing play that was from Matty Blair to set up the winning goal for John Marquis on Tuesday night.

As a former winger myself, I always enjoy it when a wideman fronts up with his marker, takes him on and gets to the by-line.

We’ve not seen many goals like that at the Keepmoat Stadium for a while.

And it’s a bit of a dying art in the modern game. You often get teams playing with narrow midfields now, or wingers cutting inside onto their stronger foot.

But Blair looks like a bit of a throwback and I’ve really liked what I’ve seen so far from him.

It was a brilliant cross for the goal, and Marquis and Andy Williams will absolutely relish that sort of service on a regular basis.

When a winger does that sort of thing it’s one of those things in the game that people really like to see.

It’s like when a big centre back comes right through the back of a striker and lets him know they’re there. Although you don’t see much of that these days either!

I think we’ve already discovered with Blair that he could be a huge asset going forward. But when he has to track back and perform defensive duties, that’s not really his game.

I thought he was quite quiet in general on Tuesday night.

But the system seemed to suit him better, because it gave him that insurance of having Mitchell Lund behind him - and I thought Lund did well.

It frees Blair up and I noticed him roaming into various areas of the pitch. After that goal, though, he’ll be encouraged to hit the by-line more often.
