A lorry driver who crashed on the A1 near Doncaster told police: “I think I only shut my eyes for two seconds.”

He was travelling along the northbound stretch of the A1 at Junction 38 near Doncaster when he smashed into cones and signs closing a lane for roadworks this morning.

South Yorkshire Police said the driver believes he momentarily closed his eyes.

The force said the driver’s response was: “I think I only shut my eyes for two seconds.”

A spokesman said: “This HGV collided with cones and signs closing a lane for roadworks at Junction 38.

“Two seconds of eyes shut could mean the difference of life and death for road workers.

“The driver was reported and the vehicle recovered by the owners.”
